It’s been a bad week for Gaelic Football in Kilkenny. In fact, it’s been a very, very bad week.
Only days after the Kilkenny under-21 footballers conceded 6-34 to Louth, the floodgates opened on their senior side against Fermanagh in Freshford this afternoon, with Peter Canavan’s side running out winners on a scoreline of 9-23 – 0-4.
That’s right, nine goals and 23 points, 32 scores in total, which means the Fermanagh men were scoring at a rate of once every two minutes, a bit ridiculous when you take into account that in the All-Ireland semi-final last year, the score was 0-4 – 0-2 at half-time.
The 46-point defeat will raise further questions about the merit of Kilkenny fielding a football team at all. They already don’t compete in the Leinster championship and although the lads who do turn out are no doubt committed to the cause, it can’t be fun being subjected to merciless beatings week after week.
Maybe they should just stick to the hurling.
