League of Ireland footballers may refuse to compete in the Dublin Super Cup this weekend, after learning they may receive less than €300 each.

Players have recently learned that they would earn only €650 before tax for the weekend’s action. After deductions, players who are already in the higher tax band would receive only €292.50 for their commitment.

It has also been reported that the players must vacate the dressing room immediately following their games for the next team to prepare. The players claim that they will be hurried from the changing rooms after their games, with no time allowed for taking a shower.

The Aviva Stadium has four dressing rooms but only two are fitted with showers, which have been allocated to Manchester City and Inter Milan. Celtic’s dressing room has showers specifically installed for an estimated €50,000.

Players were also very disappointed to learn they would only be allocated two tickets per match.

PFAI general secretary Stephen McGuinness confirmed to The Sun today that players were concerned about how they were being treated: “Some players have voiced their concerns and I will be meeting with them today.”

However the coach of the Airtricity X1, Damien Richardson, did not seem as interested in players worries, citing what a great opportunity the showpiece tournament would be.

“I’m happy enough with what the players will be paid. It’s more than adequate. While they will have to be paid for their professional services, this will be an experience money can’t buy,” he said.
