Liverpool have had a massive bid for England internation Andy Carroll turned down, according to reports.

Tottenham had previously had a £24 million for the striker turned down yesterday, with Newcastle insisting he was not for sale at any price.

With Fernando Torres’ departure from Anfield seemingly inevitable, a desperate Liverpool have topped Spurs’ offer by £6 million.

Newcastle, however, have rejected the bid. Liverpool recently signed Luis Suarez for £24 million with some speculating that the Uruguayan striker/goalkeeper would be Torres’ replacement.

Kenny Dalglish, however, wants the ex-Ajax man to be one half of a partnership and is quoted as saying: “There is as good a chance of us getting someone else in as there is of someone going out.

“The owners have been fantastically supportive. There is money there if we want to bring someone else in if something comes up that we have been interested in at the last minute.

“If we don’t get somebody, the owners might even be a little bit disappointed, which is a healthy change. It is not a PR exercise either. It is a real determination to move Liverpool onwards an upwards.”
