Looks like Andy Lee and Matthew Macklin are going to get it on

Are we edging closer to a massive Middleweight bout between two of Ireland’s best-know boxers?

There have rumours about an Andy Lee/Matthew Macklin bout for a while now but today on Newstalk, Lee made his clearest statement yet that he fancies taking on the Tipp man.

Limerick’s Lee was on the Afternoon Sports Show today and he addressed the topic of the fight that would be a huge draw in this country.

“There’s been talk of me fighting Matthew Macklin in Ireland or New York. It’s the fight I want. I think it’s time for us to get it on,” he said.

The bout makes sense for both parties. Lee’s last outing was a TKO defeat to Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr for the WBC Middleweight title while Macklin hasn’t seen action since beating Joachim Alcine in September.

With both men still at their peak, and with none of the four current Middleweight champs likely to offer Lee or Macklin a fight right now, it makes a lot of sense.

While both men have fought in Madison Square Garden, and the fight would surely be a big draw there, we hope an Irish venue gets the nod. With Lee now based in London with Adam Booth following the death of Manny Steward, the odds on a home bout has to be that little bit higher.

And with March being touted, a St Patrick’s Day showdown seems ideal, doesn’t it?

There’s no response from Macklin or his people just yet but if he does, we’ll let you know but until then, here’s Lee’s Newstalk interview.
