The Donegal footballers have been dealt a major blow with the news that promising youngster Leo McLoone faces a long spell on the sidelines.

McLoone suffered a broken ankle while playing for his club Naomh Conaill at the weekend and will undergo surgery at the Beacon Hospital in Dublin.

McLoone will have to wear a protective cast for eight weeks before rehabilitating the injury and now seems certain to miss the Ulster championship opener with Antrim in May, while he may miss out on the entire season if Donegal fail to go on an extended run in the championship,

McLoone’s loss is a big blow as the 21-year old had been in excellent form for Jim McGuinness’ side in the National League so far this season.

Speaking about McLoone in the Irish Examiner, McGuinness said: “The ankle is broken and to make matters worse and to compound the injury he also dislocated the ankle.

“He is due to undergo surgery in Dublin on Wednesday and will be in a cast for eight weeks and then it will be a matter of doing rehab.”
