In what is great news for both Munster and Ireland fans, the former Lions captain has returned to action in great form despite coming straight into Heineken Cup action short of match practice.

Munster claimed an unlikely bonus point 33-0 win over Edinburgh at Thomond Park yesterday, with O’Connell leading the way with lineout steals and powerful carries before being replaced on the hour.

“It’s just lovely to see him now looking like he’s in really good shape and giving it all for 60 minutes,” Penney is quoted as saying after the Scottish demolition.

“It’s terrific news for everyone.”

No one will be happier than Declan Kidney who knows that with Argentina and South Africa looming in the Autumn internationals, having the pack leader back and in full fitness will be a huge boost.
