No Ireland-England friendly until 2012

The FAI have ruled out a friendly against England in the near future, but an encounter between the two at the Aviva is still on the cards.

It had previously been suggested that Ireland could meet England at the Aviva as early as next June, but such a meeting will definitely not take place, an FAI spokesman has confirmed, and it now looks as if Trap’s men won’t meet Fabio Capello’s England until 2012.

“The discussions are ongoing and it is expected that an announcement will be made within the next month,” a spokesman for the FAI said on Friday night.

Next year sees a packed schedule for the Republic of Ireland team, with the inaugral Carling Nations Cup commencing in February when Ireland play Wales at the Aviva. They then face Northern Ireland and Scotland in May.

It was initially thought that a match against England could take place in June after the Euro 2012 qualifier against Macedonia in Skopje on 4 June.
