Shock as Paddy Barnes loses to Samuel Carmona Heredia in last 16 bout

Alan Loughnane

A big shock in Rio…

Paddy Barnes is out of the Olympics at the first hurdle after losing out to Spaniard Samuel Carmona Heredia in their last 16 clash today.

Barnes lost the first and third rounds to the tigerish Heredia in a split-decision loss on Day 3 of the 2016 Olympics.

The Belfast boxer did manage to win the second round but the Spanish fighter claimed the decision on the judge’s scorecards following a strong finish in the third round.

Barnes, a bronze medal winner at the Beijing and London Olympics, had been hoping to add a gold to his Olympic medal haul but it was Heredia who won out on the day.
