Paul O’Connell’s mam wins a competition to see her own son play against France

You couldn't make it up

You couldn’t make it up.

After his harrowing experience at Alton Towers, Paul O’Connell will be hoping to put the fear of god into Romania this weekend as Ireland bid for a second win at the World Cup ahead of their crunch matches against Italy and France.

The Irish icon will have a familiar face in the crowd for the match against Les Bleus though because O’Connell’s mother Shelagh has just won a competition to see the match against France that was organised by the Irish Examiner.

Shelagh, or ‘mother of a legend’ as we’re going to call her, was randomly selected and told the newspaper that “match tickets are not the problem. It’s the flights and actually getting there. For the last game, when Ireland played Canada in Cardiff, we had to fly into London, followed by a four-hour drive to Cardiff. I wasn’t the best after sitting in the car for four hours”.

Ireland take on France on Sunday October 11th which is a day that could be one of the greatest in Irish sporting history.
