Michael Conroy owes Diarmuid O’Connor a pint.
Mayo’s Diarmuid O’Connor was the deserved recipient of the Young Footballer of the Year award at the All-Star awards tonight after some fantastic displays in Mayo’s run to the All-Ireland semi-final this year.
Remarkably, it was the third time in five years it was won by a member of the O’Connor family after older brother Cillian picked it up two years in a row in 2011 and 2012.
Given the pedigree in the family and the fact that he had signalled his talent at under-age level for years – including Mayo’s All-Ireland minor victory in 2013 – there was always a chance that Diarmuid would follow in his brother’s footsteps.
So convinced was Mayo teammate Michael Conroy of his ability that he placed a decent wager (€100 at 33/1) on O’Connor picking up the Young Footballer of the Year award way back in June, giving him extra cause for celebration tonight.
Spotted the talent a while back.Congrats @DOConnor11 on the YPOY. #topman👍 pic.twitter.com/Vma4vVqgOI
