PIC: GAA club final in Galway produces a superb act of sportsmanship

Paul Moore

The GAA at its best.

The moment of victory after a referee blows the final whistle is one of the best feelings in sport but as the old saying goes, sometimes you learn more about a team’s character from a defeat than a win.

With this in mind, St. Michaels player Brian Harlowe deserves a massive amount of praise for this terrific act of sportsmanship after his side lost their recent shield final.

On Friday, two U-16 Gaelic football teams, Barna GAA Club and St Michaels GAA Club, played the shield final at Inverin, Co. Galway.

Towards the end of the match a Barna player, Rhys Butler, tore a muscle in his calf and had to be taken off. Barna went on to win the game but as they were about to get their photo taken, a St. Michaels player by the name of Brian Harlowe, noticed the injured Rhys on the sideline.

This photo was sent into us by JOE reader Frank Henry and it captures the moment that Brian and Rhys’s mother Colette Butler, carried Rhys to the team photo. A touch of class.
