That’s right, nearly £65 million for the team that finished bottom of the league.
Every year, the Championship play-off final is commonly referred to as the richest or the most lucrative game in football due to the crazy sums of money the winner will earn if they get promoted to the Premier League.
Based on its vast appeal worldwide and the huge sums of money it can command from TV rights, the English top-flight is becoming more and more lucrative and the figures have been laid bare in a study by the excellent Nick Harris (@sportingintel) for the Daily Mail.
With a combination of ‘facility fees’, prize money, shares of domestic and overseas TV rights and payments from sponsors, clubs earned an eye-watering amount from the Premier League last season, from Chelsea’s £99 million right down to the £65 million earned by bottom club QPR.
All in all, the 20 Premier League clubs shared £1.6 billion from last season alone and the way it’s going, the pot is only going to get even bigger in the seasons ahead.
