It’s been a hell of a week for both Gareth Bale and Sam Warburton, but we wonder did they ever think they’d get where they are today when they were on the same five-a-side soccer team in school?
Warburton was yesterday confirmed as the Lions captain for the tour of Australia in the summer, while Bale made it a clean sweep at the PFA awards at the weekend when collecting both the Young Player and the Senior Player of the Year awards, making it the second time in three seasons he has been voted by his peers as the best player in the Premier League.
The pair of talented Welshmen could well have shared a congratulatory phone call or text message this week as they know each other well from their school days in Whitchurch High School in Cardiff, where they were both in the same year and both excelled on the sporting field.
It’s hardly a surprise to find out that Bale was a star member of the school five-a-side soccer team all those years ago but Warburton was also handy enough to make the side, even if he does look a bit awkward and gangly compared to the rest of the team in the photo below, which Newstalk’s Off the Ball put up on their Facebook page last night.

We’re not sure whether Bale and Warburton’s team-mates ended up going on to glittering sporting careers, but no doubt they never get tired of showing it to their mates… and telling them that Bale and Warburton were only bit-part players that didn’t have half their talent at that age.
