Punters could be quids in if Mayo win Sam and Enda Kenny sheds tears on Sunday

Conor Heneghan

Surely if Mayo can end their All-Ireland famine, there won’t be a dry eye amongst the Green and Red contingent in Croke Park.

Mayo haven’t managed to lift Sam since 1951, the year the Taoiseach was born, and one can only imagine the outpouring of emotion if Stephen Rochford’s men can end the most famous famine in the GAA.

Arguably no set of supporters have been through what Mayo fans have been through in their quest to win the big prize, the Yew County have contested eight All-Ireland Finals since 1989, losing seven and drawing one in 1996, before Meath had the upper hand in the replay.

Tears are likely to be shed by Mayo fans whatever the outcome on Sunday, but if they can get over the line, Ladbrokes are offering odds of 10/11 that Enda Kenny won’t hide his emotion at what would be a momentous achievement.

And they won’t be fake tears either because as well as having played some ball himself back in the day, Enda is the son of the late Henry Kenny, who was part of the Mayo team that won their first Sam Maguire back in 1936.

Enda putting on the waterworks is just one of the specials being offered up by Ladbrokes for the big game.

If they so wish, punters can stake a few quid on Louis Walsh wearing a Mayo jersey on the X-Factor, while ultra-confident Dubs can get odds of 14/1 on the Metropolitans winning five All-Ireland titles in a row, a feat that proved beyond the great Kerry and Kilkenny teams.

If you fancy a flutter on the game itself this weekend, meanwhile, the Dubs are strong favourites at odds of 2/7, while Mayo can be backed to do the business at 5/2.

Hayley O’Connor of Ladbrokes said: “If Mayo defies their odds on Sunday, there won’t be a dry eye among fans, the Taoiseach included, we reckon. They couldn’t face a bigger task than beating Dublin though, who are 14/1 to remain dominant until 2020, by winning five in a row.”
