Giovanni Trapattoni pulled off a masterstroke against his native country with a makeshift Ireland side that nobody gave a chance of victory over Italy in Liege tonight.

The surprise win, albeit from over 90 minutes of action that saw Italy dominate with nearly 70% possession and 21 attempts on goal, certainly gives Il Trap and the boys in green a famous night to remember.

Goals in each half from Keith Andrews and Simon Cox provided the ammunition for the international friendly win but it was heroic performance from the likes of Seamus Coleman, Stephen Hunt and Stephen Ward that can claim majority of the credit.

Making his international between the sticks, David Forde kept the wolf from the door on numerous occasions on what will also be one of the greatest performances in the Galwegian’s career.

Nice one Keith

Andrews fired Ireland ahead on nine minutes with a low shot past Emiliano Viviano and into the corner of the net.

Simon Cox added the second goal in the 90th minute which made the minutes of injury time all the more bearable for Irish fans.

JOE will have more reaction to Ireland’s famous win in Liege bright and early on Wednesday morning.
