The Premier Division of the League of Ireland promises to be a more colourful place next year after Roddy Collins and Monaghan United secured promotion on Friday night.
There are many words to describe Roddy Collins, but we’ll go with effervescent: The effervescent Dubliner will return to the top division in 2012, pending agreement over a new contract with the Super Mons, of course.
Declan “Fabio” O’Brien scored twice at Terryland Park as Monaghan brought President-elect and Galway United honcho Michael D Higgins back to earth with a bump.
Ryan Brennan made it 3-0 on the night, and 5-0 on aggregate, early in the second half.
Alan Murphy hit back for Galway towards the end, but if there was any consolation on the night for the Tribesmen it came with the final whistle, which brought down the curtain on a dismal season in which they won just once in 40 competitive fixtures.
