The 2011 Rugby World Cup got underway this morning with the opening ceremony and a double Haka ahead of the tournament’s first game between warm favourites New Zealand and big-hitting outsiders Tonga.

We’re not big into opening ceremonies in the JOE office. When the fireworks were going off this morning – the real fireworks, as opposed to the metaphorical ones whenever Sonny Bill Williams, Israel Dagg and Richard Kahui got on the ball in the game to follow – the lads in here were keeping one half-interested eye on events in Auckland and listening to the supercars roar outside on Merrion Square for the beginning of this weekend’s Cannonball Run 2011 event.

Anyway, if you’re interested, apparently the opening ceremony was “very impressive”. (They always are, aren’t they?)

The real stuff started when the choreographers left the field, and it was preceded by a cool double Haka with the Tongans letting their tribal dance loose on Eden Park before the All Blacks’ version moments later.
