Samoan team manager fined 100 pigs for bad behaviour

We dread to think what Martin Johnson would have to do but Samoa’s manager at the Rugby World Cup has been hit with a porky fine for bad behaviour.

Matthew Vaea piloted his side to an early exit and reports of excessive drinking in the Samoan camp did not go down well in Vaea’s home village of Leauva’a.

Vaea had the chiefly title of ‘Tuala’ bestowed on him but the chief of the village, Vaifale Iose, believed his behaviour in New Zealand needed to be punished.

Samoan captain Mahonri Schwalger has accused Vaea of disappearing for days at a time, drinking regularly and generally treating the entire trip like a holiday instead of trying to prep his team for games.

This prompted the village to fine him 100 pigs on his return to Samoa but Vaea has instead paid a fine of 2,000 Samoan tala (€613) the rough equivalent of their value, and made a formal apology to village elders. It seems this has got him back in the good books but has left him without a sausage we imagine.

Unsurprisingly, the Samoan rugby authorities are now looking for a new manager, meaning Vaea will need to find another way to bring hime the bacon.

The job doesn’t sound too bad to us so we might drop them a CV.
