Scotland international centre Nick De Luca has become the latest celebrity tweeter to quit Twitter after receiving loads of social media abuse this week.
De Luca was the target of numbskull internet trolls masquerading as Scottish rugby supporters in the wake of the Six Nations defeat to Wales last weekend.
And the 28-year-old Edinburgh back has taken the decision to bring the virtual curtain down on his Twitter account as a result.
De Luca was singled out following his yellow card in the second half at the Millennium Stadium, which some delusional Scottish supporters reckoned was the reason for their 27-13 defeat. (It wasn’t. The reason for the defeat was that Wales are a much better team.)
A spokesman for Edinburgh Rugby was quoted by The Scotsman, “Social media, and Twitter in particular, is a very useful and positive tool for players to engage with the fans, the vast majority of whom are very supportive.
“We’re sorry Nick felt it necessary to remove himself from Twitter but it’s a personal decision which, given some of the unpleasant and personal comments, is entirely understandable.”
