Seamus Coleman: There’s something wrong if we need Roy Keane’s reality checks

Tony Cuddihy

The Everton defender was refreshingly honest about the comments made by Ireland’s assistant manager earlier this week.

Seamus Coleman says that Ireland’s players should not need reminders from Roy Keane to keep their standards high, following the criticism levelled at Aiden McGeady and others by the Republic of Ireland assistant manager.

Coleman was singled out by Keane – along with Glenn Whelan and Jon Walters – as a player who pushes himself in training.

“They need to push themselves – that doesn’t come from the coaches,” said Keane. “That comes from good players, good pros.

“The Glenn Whelans, the Jon Walters, the Seamus Colemans – I didn’t have to push any of them.”

The Everton full-back knows his responsibilities, regardless of what Keane says to the press.

“I don’t think Roy Keane should have to say that to any of us,” Coleman told the media down in Cork .

“As professional footballers we should know to keep our standards up at all times, and that’s coming from Roy.

“But if all footballers in the squad don’t know that, then there’s something wrong.”
