Reigning Airtricity League Champions Shamrock Rovers are on the lookout for a new manager having parted company with Stephen Kenny.
The news will hardly come as a surprise to followers of domestic football in this country as Kenny had struggled to live up to the achievements of predecessor Michael O’Neill since taking on the job last December.
Having won back to back titles in the Airtricity League, the Hoops currently lie in fourth place in the table, 13 points adrift of leaders Sligo Rovers, and haven’t won a home league game in four months. They hadn’t actually lost a home league game all season either until Bohemians snatched a 1-0 win on Monday night, the first time Bohs have ever beaten Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium.
That defeat prompted the Shamrock Rovers board to act and they announced the decision to part company with Kenny earlier today.
“We have not taken this decision lightly and we are extremely disappointed with the turn of events,” Shamrock Rovers chairman Jonathan Roche said.
“However, the club feels that this is the right decision at this time, and attention now turns to Friday night’s FAI Ford Cup game against Shelbourne and identifying the next manager of Shamrock Rovers. We would like to wish take this opportunity to wish Stephen the best for the future.”
As well as poor performances in the league, Rovers exited the Champions League qualifying stages to Ekranas of Lithuania in tame fashion and there had been murmurings of disapproval over Kenny’s tenure for some time.
Rovers’ assistant boss Stephen Glass will take charge of the side for the FAI Ford Cup clash with Shelbourne this Friday and the search for a new man will commence immediately.
As for Kenny, it obviously didn’t work out for him with Shamrock Rovers, but his record with the likes of Bohs and Derry in the past speaks for itself and he will likely be back in management before too long.
