In August his stunning goal put Shamrock Rovers on the road to Europa League glory but now Pat Sullivan may never play football again.
The 29-year-old, whose brilliant volley levelled the Hoops tie with Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League qualifiers, tells today’s Irish Daily Star that he is just not that interested in football and is taking a career break to go travelling.
“It’s probably 50/50 whether or not I play again. It all depends how I get on and how I feel,” said the two-time league champion.
“I don’t live and breathe football. I probably did at one point but certainly not anymore. I don’t really watch too much football outside of training and playing the game. It just gets too much for me sometimes personally – especially these days when there are three games on TV some days.”
So Sullivan has decided to leave Tallaght and head for Melbourne and he admits that he almost made the same move 12 months ago. Rovers fans, and accountants, are very happy he decided to stay.
But he isn’t turning his back on the game completely.
“I could come back in a year or two and be more than happy to play. I’m sure I have a few more good years left in my legs. I just don’t know right now,” he said.
If it is only for the chance we might see a goal like the one above again, we all hope he does.
