The Six Nations kicked off on Saturday with win for Les Bleus and Wales over England and Italy respectively.

A last gasp try by replacement Gael Fickou helped France to a 26-24 win over England in a pulsating clash at the Stade de France.

England had staged a remarkable comeback after trailing 16-3 with a quarter of the game gone, and led 24-22 with only four minutes remaining.

However, the visitors were stunned as France managed one final attack and Stuart Lancaster lost a Six Nations game as England coach for only the third time.

Wales, meanwhile, got the defence of their crown underway with an underwhelming 23-15 win over Italy in Cardiff.

Tries from Alex Cuthbert and Scott Williams saw Warren Gatland’s men go in with a healthy 17-3 lead at half-time, and they held on despite two tries from Michele Campagnaro.

“It was tough. You’ve got to give Italy a lot of credit – they made it tough for us,” Gatland said.

“We wanted to get this game under our belt and focus on next week. It’s going to be tough for Ireland”

“We’re pretty satisfied. There were some positives in our game and things to work on in terms of finishing and being clinical.

“It’s a reasonable start for us and, the way Italy performed, I wouldn’t be surprised if they won a few games in this competition. They won a couple last year and I think they’ll do so again.”
