LA Galaxy new-boy Robbie Keane has revealed he had a text from Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni after completing the transfer to the USA this week. So, we’re wondering what Trap said to his skipper?
Keane’s ten-year top-flight career in England came to an end after Spurs accepted an offer from Galaxy to make the 31-year-old the latest big-name recruit to Major League Soccer.
His three-year contract in California will see him earn approximately $85,000 a week – but perhaps more pertinently for Irish fans is whether it has any immediate negative impact on his international career, with four crucial Euro 2012 qualifiers coming up over the next two months.
Quoted in the Irish Independent on Saturday morning, Robbie said, “I had a text this week from Trapattoni, but I didn’t have a chance to get back to him. Throughout my career I’ve always been committed to Ireland and that won’t change unless the manager of Ireland tells me different.”
So any ideas what Trap might have said?
“No bother, skip, you’ll be in my team as long as you can stand up straight xxx”
Or maybe, with a little help from Manuela, “That is it Robbie. You can consider our relationship over.”
Or maybe, given that Robbie hasn’t felt a pressing need to get back to him, it wasn’t all that important anyway.
Whichever it is, we’ll know more when Trap gets round to picking his team for the game against Slovakia on Friday 2 September, but if Shane Long continues to hit the net in the Premier League and Kevin Doyle proves his form and fitness with Wolves, old Gio will have a big decision to make.
