Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo has been busy, with a raft of players on their way in and out of the Champions League winners.
Chelsea’s remarkable run to Champions League glory last season with achieved with squad that many felt was a little bit past it. It made Roberto di Matteo’s job of beating Barcelona, Bayern Munich, as well as grabbing the FA Cup, all the more impressive.
But now the Italian, having already seen his Munich hero Didier Drogba leave, is letting a few more go. It was confirmed today that full-back Jose Boswinga and winger Saloman Kalou are to leave Chelsea.
The Portuguese defender played 126 times for the Blues in four years but his contract will not be renewed. Kalou departs after six seasons, and he racked up 107 appearances as a sub, a club record.
As for those coming in, it is reported today that Brazilian full-back Maicon will be drafted in from Inter Milan to replace Boswinga. Good news for Gareth Bale at least.
There are also lots of rumours today that another Chelsea veteran, Frank Lampard, will leave the club, with LA Galaxy rumoured to fancy taking him to the MLS.
We’re not too sure there is much truth in that story but with Edin Hazard, and Marko Marin, now on the Chelsea books, maybe Lamps will be turned off (sorry).
Even if Lampard does stick around, it looks like it will be a vastly different Chelsea we see next season. With a higher league position a must – they finished 6th last season – it looks like Di Matteo is already plotting to achieve that.
