Hot favourite Black Caviar just about lived up to the hype in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, but crikey it was a close call at the finish.
There was little but a nose hair in the difference between the queen of Australian racing and Moonlight Cloud at the finishing line as jockey Luke Nolen bizarrely seemed to ease off right at the death, almost opening the door for what would have been a dramatic upset.
Certainly the hearts of all who backed the 1/6 favourite would have been firmly stuck in their mouths, but the six-year old prevailed to claim her 22nd victory in 22 starts, with the Diamond Jubilee representing her 12th Group One success.
Despite the victory, Black Caviar still lags behind Frankel – who romped home in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on Tuesday – as the world’s greatest, but for now, trainer Peter Moody and Black Caviar’s owners can soak up her latest success, nail-biting and all as it was.
Check out the incredibly close finish for yourself in the video above.
