Sunderland have sacked Adam Johnson after he pled guilty to one count of sexual activity with a child, and one count of grooming.
A statement on the Sunderland website read:
‘In light of Adam Johnson’s guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect.
‘The club will make no further comment.’
The former Manchester City winger will stand trial at Bradford Crown Court on Friday on two counts of sexual activity with a child, which he denies.
Adidas also announced on Thursday that they had severed ties with the former England winger.
The 28-year-old’s last appearance for Sunderland came against Liverpool last weekend, a match in which he scored.
He started his career with Middlesbrough before moving on to City and Sunderland.
