Serena Williams defeated Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 5-7, 6-2
For a while it looked as if Serena Williams might cruise to the women’s singles title without dropping a game, but she was made fight for it in the end.
The world number six started this afternoon’s final in incredibly impressive fashion, taking the first five games as her Polish opponent Agnieszka Radwanska struggled to get to grips with the occasion on Centre Court.
Radwanska won the sixth game to finally get off the mark, but it was little more than an arbitrary achievement as Williams quickly took the subsequent game to win the first set 6-1.
After what happened in the first set, Radwanska was probably delighted to get a reprieve when the heavens opened before the start of the second, and when she returned she was a different animal and recovered from having been broken early in the second set to break the powerful Williams serve twice to take the second set 7-5.
From what had looked like an unassailable position, Radwanska suddenly looked like she might cause a major upset, but then Williams struck four aces in one service game early in the third set, broke Radwanska in the following game and never looked back.
Williams took the final set 6-2 to claim her fifth Wimbledon title, but credit to Radwanska, not many would have predicted she could have mounted such a comeback given where she found herself after the first set.
An entertaining final, and it sets the tone nicely for what could be a classic encounter between Andy Murray and Roger Federer tomorrow afternoon.
We can’t wait.
