FAI Cup Final: Derry City 3-2 St. Patrick’s Athletic (after extra-time)

Remember that famous picture of Gary Neville kissing Paul Scholes from a few years back? Derry’s Kevin Deery and Rory Patterson provided another one for the homoerotic football gallery this afternoon.

Patterson’s goal in the last minute of the first half of extra time (read it slowly and it will make sense) proved to be the winner in a rip-roaring FAI Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium as the Candystripes claimed their third title in ten years.

St. Pat’s put up a hell of a fight and forced the game into extra-time through a Christy Fagan equaliser in the 87th minute. Fagan’s teammate Sean O’Connor had put Pat’s in front shortly after half-time with a brilliant free-kick, but goals from Sean Greacen and Rory Patterson put Derry in the driving seat before Fagan’s late rescue act.

Patterson struck again in extra-time to the obvious delight of his team mates. So delighted was Kevin Deery in fact, that he planted a kiss straight on Patterson’s eye and as is evident from the picture below, the hero of the hour didn’t know how to react.

Neither Patterson nor Deery will care too much about the slagging they’ll get if they get wind of the photo tonight or in the next couple of days, but chances are it won’t be the last time they see it or hear about it.

Hearty congratulations to Deery, Patterson and everyone associated with Derry City on their achievement.
