There wasn’t much joy to be derived from our Friday Flutters last weekend, but thankfully our punt on Everton provided some saving grace at least.
We’ve decided that given their oscillating form at the start of the season that Leinster v Munster is a little hard to call on Saturday night, so instead we’ve decided to focus our efforts and our pennies on football with a dash of horse racing thrown into the mix.
As an accumulator, these three work out at around 27/1, but as usual, we recommend picking and choosing where you see fit.
Tottenham to beat Aston Villa, 4/9
It would be a very Spurs-like thing to do to go and lose a home game they really should win a week after winning at Old Trafford for the first time in a generation, but we’ve a feeling this Spurs team is a little bit different.
Aston Villa are making progress under Paul Lambert, but it’s baby steps as opposed to giant strides so far and we fancy the hosts to win relatively comfortably on Sunday.
Camelot to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, 3/1
We had him as a dead cert to win the St. Leger a few weeks back – we weren’t the only ones – so after that little flutter ended in disappointment, surely he won’t let us down again?
The fact that he lost that one, the change of jockey from Joseph O’Brien to Frankie Dettori, the trip and the bigger field have all combined to lengthen Camelot’s odds to 3/1 for this one, but we reckon the dual Derby winner can see off the challenge of Orfevre and the rest on Sunday.
Cristiano Ronaldo to score and Real Madrid to beat Barcelona, 4/1
Although it’s only a few weeks into the new season, it’s hard to stress the importance of Sunday evening’s El Clasico from Real Madrid’s perspective. Eight points behind Barca already, they can’t really afford to lose at Camp Nou and will take inspiration from their victory there at a crucial stage last season.
As for Ronaldo, he’s on the back of a hat-trick against Ajax, he’s scored in the last four Clasicos at the Camp Nou, he won’t have Carles Puyol to deal with and he seems to be over that bout of sadness he was suffering from earlier on in the season. An ambitious shout perhaps, but one we reckon is worth a few quid.
