Forget the All-Stars, these are the awards that GAA players really want to win.
The Maurice Fitz award for the score with the most outrageous curl of the week
Conor McManus set the tone for a decent Monaghan performance with this brilliant catch, surge and curling left boot over the bar against Cavan on Sunday.
Not quite as curlsome as last week’s effort from Brian Kavanagh but nothing ugly about it either.
The ‘business at the back and sides, party up front’ championship haircut of the week award
Limerick debutant Cian Lynch explained to The Sunday Game that his uncle Ciarán Carey had dropped in to him before mass on Sunday morning to wish him luck but he surely must’ve squeezed in a trip to the barber too.
Not dissimilar in tightness of the sides and length of the top to last week’s winner, Damien Comer. These young sportsmen are a credit to their parishes and their hair stylists.
The GAA shtyle statement of the week
The hurling was back this week, which means Donal Óg was back, which means the fashion trailblazer of the Sunday Game’s galaxy of punditry stars graced our screens for the first time this summer.
He announced his return with an understated blue ensemble, no dickie-bow, no braces.
Presumably, we can expect the fireworks and three-piece suits once Cork’s hurlers make their championship bow.
The ‘did he get that from the soccer?’ showboat of the week
Nothing fancy this week. We need some showboating lads or this award will have to go.
Sign that the GAA is isn’t getting soft award
Last week we decided the GAA was getting soft because of a fist-bumping incident in the Offaly/Longford game.
This week we’re rowing back thanks to the appearance in the championship of several (two) of the manliest manifestations of maledom – the moustache.
The nose neighbour is back kids and Willie Joe Padden would want you to wear one.
Only in the GAA moment of the week
Marty Morrissey being called ugly by Joe Brolly. You’re obviously thinking of a different Marty than we are Joe.
JOE’s Guaranteed Irish Sports’ Star of the Week Award, a tribute to the tradition of incredibly long names for award titles in the GAA
Slightly unorthodox but we’re plumping for a journalist here – RTÉ’s Claire MacNamara.
Why? For performing the impossible and drawing himself out.
