Munster are out of the Heineken Cup after going down bravely to Clermont Auvergne, but it could have been a whole lot different had Nigel Owens not made a hugely controversial call right at the death. Needless to say, it didn’t go down well.
With only seconds left on the clock, Munster had started a move inside their own half which was gathering a lot of momentum until Nigel Owens blew for what he deemed to be a forward pass by Paul O’Connell, a call that looked wrong at the time and was shown to be wrong in the replays afterwards.
It was a huge call for Owens to have to make at such a crucial time in the match and although there was no guarantee that Munster would have gone on and scored a try and claimed the seven points they needed for a single-point victory, it was very tough on Rob Penney’s side, who had battled bravely to be in contention after playing second fiddle for the majority of the first hour in Montpellier.
Needless to say Owens’ decision didn’t go down well afterwards, here’s a flavour of what people had to say about the incident on Twitter.
