Some, meanwhile, were keen to stress that it was against a League Two side but Gerrard’s display certainly got people talking.
The Liverpool skipper last night played his first game for the Reds since announcing that he would be leaving at the end of the season, inspiring his side to victory over League Two side AFC Wimbledon to ensure Liverpool’s passage to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Gerrard scored both of Liverpool’s goals in a 2-1 victory and his performance prompted some high-profile members of the Twitterati to sing his praises and remind those who supported Gerrard’s decision what they would be missing when he’s gone.
Good job by the boys today . The legend was at it again. 👏

If Gerrard was one of the new signings at 24 we'd be raving about him, but we judge him at 34 against himself at his peak.

The long goodbye continues in style. Gerrard great free-kick, restores #lfc lead. Away fans singing his name with gusto.

The people who say now,it's a mistake to let SG go are the ones who said 2 weeks ago, dont bring him back after the Swansea game #blinkered

Others, however, were keen to point out that Gerrard was playing against a side three rungs below Liverpool in the English football ladder and that it was nothing to be getting carried away about.
Steven Gerrard has scored 2 goals from play in his last 65 Premier League games.

64% – Steven Gerrard had the lowest pass completion of any Liverpool player in the first half vs AFC Wimbledon. Awry.

Steven Gerrard's birthday falls on the same day as the FA Cup final, what a fitting send off it would be if someone can get him a ticket.

By announcing his decision to leave well in advance of the summer, Gerrard will have wanted to avoid this type of fanfare about his impending departure, but we can expect to see plenty more of this between now and the end of the season.
