Cristiano Ronaldo may have scored his 500th career goal against Malmo FF tonight, but he’s not catching Pele any time soon.
The Brazilian remains in a league of his own when it comes to goalscoring, with 757 strikes in a career that saw him win the World Cup with Brazil three times.
He played the vast majority of his career in his homeland with Santos, something used as a stick to beat his record with given Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s goalscoring exploits in Europe with Manchester United, Real Madrid and, in the Argentine’s case, Barcelona.
Messi remains 33 goals shy of Ronaldo in 467 career strikes, but is the younger of the two at just 28.
Whether Ronaldo – who turns 31 in January – has another 258 goals in him is highly doubtful, particularly given his relatively slow start to the current domestic season in Spain and rumours that he will be sold next summer.
