The London Irish man last appeared at the end of October against Harlequins but is now facing between four and six months on the sidelines.

The 29 year-old only joined the London side after finding his opportunites at Munster limited after injury set-backs and the emergence of Conor Murray.

O’Leary has had his fair share of injuries in the past, with a broken ankle ruling him out of the Lions tour to South Africa in 2009.

London Irish have said the scrum-half has undergone surgery to his lower back in what they have described as a ‘degenerative pre-existing injury’.
