One of Ireland’s most underrated gems.
After making his debut during Manchester United’s treble-winning 1999 season, John O’Shea went on to win five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups, and a Champions League. Quite a staggering CV.
While never a player to enjoy the limelight, his career has been full of standout moments.
Nuts…
There are not many feelings better than successfully nutmegging someone. It’s just beautiful. We’ve all done it playing 5-a-side, and it can often get a better celebration than a goal. OK, now imagine that feeling, except in the Champions League, against one of the best players in the world. We can only hope that John cheekily muttered “close your legs mate” as he drifted past the Portuguese legend Luis Figo.

A delightful chip against Arsenal
Cast your mind back to February of 2005. THAT tunnel bust-up.

But Roy Keane’s rant against Patrick Vieira wasn’t the only mark made on the game by an Irishman. John O’Shea popped up with what has to have been the best goal of his career. After a gorgeous pass from Paul Scholes, O’Shea scored a chip that Eric Cantona would have been proud of. The look of surprise on his face is priceless, but we know you meant it John.
Here it is in all its glory:

John O’Shea, United’s number one.
O’Shea was often praised for his versatility. He made his United debut as a centre half, but following injuries to Gary Neville and Wes Brown, he showed that he was more than capable of slotting in at right-back. But it was one match against Spurs that perfectly embodied just how versatile the man really was. Goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar broke his nose, so O’Shea had to hop in goal. Proper Sunday league stuff… And he did a bloody great job, keeping out fellow Irishman Robbie Keane with a beautiful tackle. Rooney thought it was great craic altogether…

“It’s there! It’s there! It’s John O’Shea on his 100th international!”
Making 100 appearances for your country is an incredible achievement.
John O’Shea made his 100th appearance against world champions Germany, out in Germany. Ireland were a goal down, with one minute to go. O’Shea wandered forward, and after a ball was played back across the box by Jeff Hendrick, O’Shea got his body in front of Mats Hummels, and poked the ball into the back of the net. A great goal, and an extremely important one too.

And for the weekend that’s in it…
Manchester United vs Liverpool is without a doubt one of the biggest fixtures in world football. There is always so much at stake, so scoring a winner in the last minute is definitely a way to solidify your spot as a fan favourite.
