Contrary to reports, Sebastian Vettel might not end up at Ferrari in the future, with Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo offering an explanation that included the word ‘henhouse’. That’s right, ‘henhouse’.
You may have heard earlier today that reigning world champion Vettel was set to link up with Ferrari for the 2014 season, with reports suggesting that he had already signed a deal that is dependent on his results next year.
Alonso’s move to Ferrari, where he would likely link up with the brilliant but temperamental Fernando Alonso, would appear to be news to Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo, who raised fairly understandable concerns about having two high profile and incredibly competitive drivers on the same team.
“Today the problem is not with drivers,” di Montezemolo is quoted as saying on the Ferrari website.
“2014 is still to come but I don’t want to have two roosters in the same henhouse, rather two drivers who race for Ferrari and not for themselves.
“I don’t want problems and rivalries, which we didn’t have between Schumacher and Irvine, between Schumacher and Barrichello, between Alonso and Massa or Massa and Schumi or Massa and Raikkonen.”
He also rebuffed speculation that Red Bull designer Adrian Newey was about to jump ship to Ferrari.
“As for Newey, I can say that he is very good at his job but we also managed to win eight constructors’ titles in the last 13 championships without him: I have huge faith in our own engineers,” he added.
Red Bull were also unimpressed with the Vettel to Ferrari rumours, which originated from a BBC article, releasing a statement which read: “The BBC article is factually incorrect. Sebastian will be with the team in 2014.”
Red Bull are obviously determined not to let go of the German without a fight, but there also tends to be no smoke without fire in these cases, so we wouldn’t rule out anything yet.
