It was a good day for the corner backs union but a sad one for the rest of the Gaelic Football world after Stevie McDonnell brought the curtain down on a glittering inter-county career. His peers were quick to pay tribute.
One of the greatest forwards of the modern or indeed any era, Stevie from Killeavy was an integral part of the Armagh side that won an All-Ireland in 2002 and dominated Ulster football around the turn of the millennium, with McDonnell picking up seven Ulster titles in his 13-year inter-county career.
As well as shining at inter-county level, McDonnell has probably been Ireland’s most outstanding performer in the International Rules Series in recent years and was particularly effective during the latest victory over the Aussies Down Under, when Ireland ran out comprehensive winners in both tests.
Still only 32, many will feel that McDonnell has more to give and is stepping down too soon, but he’s certainly left us with plenty of memories.
Farewell Stevie, you’ll be sadly missed.
