What a bunch of spoilsports.

Rules are rules and they exist for a reason, but under certain circumstances, they can and possibly even should be bended if enough of a case is made to do things a little differently than by the book.

A good example of when they should be broken was illustrated at the weekend when Jack Laverty, a freshman at West Chester University, took part in a contest that required the participant to successfully complete a lay-up, a foul shot, a three-pointer and a shot from half-court within 25 seconds to claim the $10,000 prize.

Laverty completed all of these shots, but was still denied a prize that would have come in pretty handy for a freshman at college, especially with Spring Break not far around the corner. Why? Because he missed his original effort at a half-court shot, before (in our eyes at least) totally redeeming himself with a dramatic last-gasp effort that went into the basket right on the buzzer and sent the crowd into raptures.

The euphoria was short-lived, however, because Lavery was soon informed by college officials that he was not entitled to the money on the basis that he didn’t complete all of the shots on the first go, but Jack and his family are hoping that they might change their mind after what was a pretty unbelievable effort.

And well they should too. We’re right behind you Jack.
