They’re not just good at hurling in Kilkenny, as the talented Michael Drennan is showing in Europe’s top Academy tournament this season.

It is easy to get down about the Irish soccer team but if you look just below the senior ranks there are lots of bright prospects. The likes of Sean Maguire and Noe Baba are just making a name for themselves after moves cross channel and now one who has already made the trip, Aston Villa’s Michael Drennan, is showing them how it is done.

The Kilkenny native, who made his name for the Evergreen club in the city, signed for Villa in 2010 and the 19-year-old is now the top scorer in the NextGen Series.

NextGen is a tournament involving 24 Academy teams from all across Europe. With the likes of Barcelona, Ajax, Juventus and Celtic, it is really like a Junior Champions League and it is the highest standard of football for developing players outside of international football.

Drennan tops the goal scoring charts with six so far in this season’s campaign and in this video the striker explains how he is enjoying this competition.

Already a regular in Irish underage teams, we hope we see a lot more of Drennan in near future.

Massive hat-tip to PogMoGoal for alerting us to this.
