Convicted drug cheat Dwain Chambers moved one step closer to the Olympics last night but he managed to tarnish his image even further. Seriously.
There’s a lot to dislike about British sprinter Dwain Chambers. As a convicted drug cheat, he is the very symbol of what is wrong with modern athletics and much of modern sport. After more court cases than a Matlock box set, he has won the right to compete at the London Olympics but he has yet to run fast enough. We doubt we’re alone in hoping he doesn’t make it.
Anyway, he moved a big step closer yesterday by winning the 100m Great Britain Olympic trial race but he didn’t run quite fast enough to qualify for the big summer show as of right. However, he is now in pole position to be selected for the relay teams at least, and he has until July 1 to clock the required 10.18 to be guaranteed his spot in the blocks later this year. It looks like Chambers will be on show, a very large stain on the home team.
But any viewers of his race yesterday, who may have been thinking it was time to give Chambers a second chance, would probably have been turned off by his rather unpleasant, and sweary, post-race celebration.
Steve Cram, on commentary duty for the BBC, didn’t like it, and he said maybe Chambers was ‘pumped-up’. That was an unfortunate choice of words for someone convicted of taking steroids.
Anyway, watch for yourself above. Just make sure no children are present.
