It was scored from a few inches out and any number of Dortmund players could have been ruled offside but this might just be the most important goal scored in the Champions League this season.
Unless you saw it, it is really hard to describe exactly what happened in Dortmund tonight but here goes.
An unfancied Malaga side played really well and looked all set to go through after a 2-1 away win… until we arrived at the most dramatic closing minutes in a Champions League game since Manchester United’s victory over Bayern Munich in the 1999 final.
After Eliseu had given Malaga a 2-1 lead with a goal that was clearly offside, Dortmund hit back with late goals through Marco Reus and Felipe Santana, who scored one of the most mental goals you’ll see in any game this year.
From a Dortmund free-kick, the ball was knocked around the box as if in a pinball machine until it arrived at the feet on Santana on the line and, much like the man in a similar position in the Father Ted over 75s tournament, the centre back made no mistake from close range.
As you’ll see, any number of players could have been ruled offside, but they weren’t and despite hardly deserving to go through, the German side are in the semi-finals and may just think that the football Gods are shining upon them such was the manner of their victory tonight.
What a mental, mental night.
