With the Late Late Toy Show grabbing most Irish attention, many would have missed Andrew Flintoff’s successful career change last night.
By Declan Whooley
The former England cricketer became a professional heavyweight boxer after defeating American Richard Dawson in front of more than 6,000 fans at the Manchester Arena last night.
Flintoff recovered from a knock-down in the second round to win the bout by a single point, though the fight will hardly go down in the pantheon of classics.
Indeed there has been widespread criticism of the fight and the fact that it was allowed in the first place, but that argument is for another day.
Flintoff overcame his undefeated opponent, albeit just three bouts, on a 39-38 score much to the delight of the crowd and has said he will wait until after Christmas to decide about his future.
It wasn’t pretty, but as the saying goes, a win is a win.
