VIDEO: George Hamilton’s full-time commentary as Iceland beat England is just perfect

Paul Moore

Never a truer word spoken.

Brilliant football commentary can rarely be bettered because it has the ability to echo through the years.

Kenneth Wolstenholme’s iconic line that “some people are on the pitch … they think it’s all over … it is now” perfectly captured the madcap finale to the 1966 World Cup final. Barry Davies’ work behind the microphone is seldom bettered, he brilliantly summarised Italy’s exit from World Cup ’02 by saying that “the Italians are out because they will not learn.”

George Hamilton knows a thing or two about what’s required to define iconic moments in Irish sport, we can still recite his commentary for David O’Leary’s winning penalty against Romania word-for-word, and the RTÉ commentator was at his very best when the full-time blew on Iceland’s historic win against England.

We really love his line ”Four days that have shaken a kingdom’.

Take a look.
