Never mind Hawkeye, an actual hawk would have seen this go wide…
St Michael’s from Dunfanaghy/Creeslough in Donegal took on Carrickmore of Tyrone in the Paul McGirr Memorial Ulster Under-16 Club Champions competition this week and the game almost threw up one of the most controversial GAA moments of the year.
During the game, St Michael’s put together a lovely bit of attacking play but unfortunately they didn’t finish off the move as the ball skewed off the outside of their midfielder’s right boot and went wide.
The ball clearly went wide but the umpire on the near side somehow thought it went over the bar. To be fair, the sun was in his eyes and the player was pretty close in but it was still a brutal call.
Luckily sense prevailed and the referee listened to the linesman and eventually waved it wide.
