Robbie Keane’s 49th international goal secured the Carling Nations Cup for Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday night.
Keane moved two away from the big 50-goal milestone with a brace against woeful Northern Ireland in midweek and he closed to within one after firing the only goal of the game against Scotland.
Needing just a draw to secure the inaugural Carling Nations Cup crown, Giovanni Trapattoni’s lads went one better than that to complete a 100 per cent record of wins and clean sheets in the tournament.
After a difficult end to the season at relegated West Ham, Robbie has now scored three times in a week in the green, and Irish supporters will hope that he carries that form into Saturday night’s big Euro 2012 qualifier in Macedonia.
