It was ultimately fruitless in the end, but Arsenal very nearly pulled off what would have been one of the biggest ever shocks in the Champions League thanks to this effort from Laurent Koscielny.
Sure, Bayern weren’t great on the night, but Arsenal deserve huge credit for their attempts to pull off what seemed like an impossible result after they were written off by all and sundry beforehand.
The Gunners scored at the beginning and end of the clash at the Allianz Arena, with Olivier Giroud blasting home from a couple of yards out after four minutes and Laurent Koscielny giving the travelling supporters hope with a powerful header late on (see video above).
What you won’t see in the video was a tiny bit of a shemozzle – if it was in the GAA it would be an insult to the word but soccer is a completely different animal – as the Arsenal players tried to grab the ball off Manuel Neuer, but it was a storm in a teacup really and both sets of players were back ready for kick-off a few seconds later.
So near but yet so far for Arsenal then, while those who tipped Bayern for the Champions League title after their performance at the Emirates might well be revising their opinions after a pretty underwhelming display lacking in (jaded stereotype alert) typical German efficiency on the night.
