We all love seeing a spectacular try now and again, but a perfectly-executed last-ditch tackle can be equally as compelling to watch. Like this one from the Chiefs’ Tim Nanai-Williams at the weekend.
Nanai-Williams had quite a game in the Chiefs’ 37-29 victory over the Sharks on Saturday, scoring a brace of tries and ending up on the receiving end of meaty challenge from Francois Steyn, for which Steyn was cited but eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.
While he’ll no doubt have been happy with his contribution to the scoreboard, we dare say that the 23-year old will look back just as fondly on a quite brilliant tackle on Cobus Reinach when the Sharks were threatening a comeback late in the game.
Having intercepted the ball from a scrum, Reinach looked set to take the ball under the posts for a try until Nanai-Williams dived at his legs, not only managing to make contact but also taking Reinach down and stopping him firmly in his tracks.
The Chiefs did concede a penalty and a further three points but it could have been a whole lot worse had Nanai-Williams not executed an even better impersonation of the patented Stringer ankle-tap we have seen on many occasions over the years, most memorably against England’s Dan Luger a few years back.
Hat-tip to the lads at Rugby Dump for this one
