A head butt, a kiss on the cheek and a cheap knockout shot were all part of a bizarre WBC World Welterweight title clash between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz that ended in farcical circumstances.

The talented but smug Mayweather knocked out the Mexican in the fourth round with a couple of cheap shots that came at the end of a truly bizarre sequence of events at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

As the fourth round drew to a close, Ortiz had Mayweather on the ropes and was pummelling him with a series of shots before inexplicably catching the man known as ‘Money’ with a head butt.

Referee Joe Cortez briefly called a halt to proceedings and Ortiz, for his part, apologised to Mayweather and even went as far to kiss him on the cheek. When the ref did eventually bring the two fighters together, Mayweather floored Ortiz with a left and right combination and caught his opponent completely off guard.

Ortiz clearly wasn’t ready for Mayweather’s opportunistic combination, but Cortez saw nothing wrong with what had transpired and awarded the fight to Mayweather, much to the chagrin of the majority of the 22,000 spectators.

“After we touched gloves I threw the left hook, then a right. In the ring you have to protect yourself at all times,” said Mayweather after the fight, but his opponent saw it differently.

“I took the break exactly as I was told and then he blindsided me,” Ortiz said.

“I’m not a dirty fighter and I apologised for the head butt. As far as I’m concerned I came to entertain the fans and I think I did that. There was a mixed communication with the referee. It was a learning experience.”
