This is either extremely brave or amazingly stupid…
World Series of Fighting welterweight Ryan Ford lost via submission in the opening round of his fight with Jake Shields on Saturday night, but that didn’t tell the whole story of the bout.
A video has emerged showing that Ford fought on Saturday with a broken arm. That’s right. A broken feckin’ arm.
He suffered the break during training in the week leading up to the fight, but still lined out to face former UFC star Shields.
You have to feel a semblance of sympathy for Ford who wanted to pull out of the fight but, due to financial reasons, was forced to fight while injured. He doesn’t get paid when he doesn’t appear in the Octagon and by the way he talks in the video, he accepts he is going to lose, but at least he will get paid for doing so.
It doesn’t seem fair on either the fighter or the fans who pay in to watch a competitive bout. But it must be said that Ford knocked down Shields in the opening moments with a stiff jab, but it was all one-way traffic after that.
Shield won via rear-naked-choke, but what would have happened if he had caught Ford in an armbar?
